On 14th September ESBA President David Caro was invited by the European Commission to take part in the Keynote Opening Panel: The Single Market – 25 years at the Single Market Forum Closing Event in Riga, Latvia. The panel included two entrepreneurs, Francois Galpin (France) who started his safety products business in Germany and Valdis Kulpe (Latvia) a businessman supplying plywood products. Irmfried Schwimann represented the European Commission in her capacity of Deputy Director-General of DG Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SME’s. The panel had an interesting discussion, including audience interventions, on the benefits of the Single Market and what needs to be done. This mainly developed around the initial removal of barriers to cross-border trade and the risks of new barriers through Geoblocking and Contract Law legislation, plus, the difficulties found in the services industries trying to work cross-border in some countries. It was agreed that the need for effective and efficient Single Point of Contact and One Stop Shop mechanisms is so important to facilitate improved cross-border services.
