Reducing Administrative Burdens

As part of the Better Regulation Agenda the European Commission, in 2003, announced an Action Programme to reduce administrative burdens on businesses in the EU by 25% in 2012. Recently the Commission has announced a series of initiatives to pursue this objective:

Firstly, Vice-President Guenter Verheugen, who is responsible for Enterprise and Industry, launched an online consultation, which invites entrepreneurs to identify unnecessary red tape. The consultation is inspired by existing examples of best practice in Belgium and the Netherlands.

Secondly, the Commission established a High Level Group of Stakeholders with a mandate to offer advice on the Action Programme's implementation. Convened by President Barroso and Vice-President Verheugen, the HLG is chaired by Edmund Stoiber, former Prime Minister of Bavaria.

Thirdly, the Commission issued its first Annual Report on the ambitious Action Programme. It estimated that EU businesses saved approximately €500 million as a result of five Fast Track Actions to reduce red tape during 2007 and expects €800 million savings to follow in the short term.

In this context, ESBA has engaged in a series of activities, listed below, targeted at the Media, EU Policy Makers and SME stakeholders in support of the Commission's headline goal. The Alliance will be announcing, via the website, several forthcoming activities planned for 2008 in this field shortly.
