ESBA WELCOMES THE FIRST SCREENING OF EU REGULATION AND URGES THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION AND MEMBER STATES TO FIGHT ALSO AGAINST “EU ANTI SMEs SOFT RULES”

The European Small Business Alliance has welcomed the first action undertaken by the European Commission to withdraw some of the pending regulatory proposals. This is finally a good signal towards all those in the public and private sector who sought to regulate or asked for regulation without proper impact assessment and cost-efficiency analysis. “More can be done, but this is at least a start that small businesses across the EU should be aware of” said Brian A. Prime, President of ESBA, at a recent small business policy event in Cardiff Wales. “ESBA will continue to ask for an independent EU regulatory agency to scan future EU regulation but also to review proper implementation and enforcement of EU regulations”.

Besides EU regulation, ESBA now starts a EU wide campaign against what can be called “anti SMEs soft rules”. The current focus on better regulation should not hide a problem which is probably even more important for SMEs and self-employed, namely soft rules preventing the small companies from a fair access to trade.

“This is particularly true in the public procurement markets across the EU” added Brian A. Prime. “Tendering procedures as well as contractual conditions are increasingly becoming so cumbersome that many SMEs can not afford to participate in public contracts or public projects”. ESBA will soon start scanning these “EU Anti SMEs Soft Rules” and highlight them on its website.
