News from Brussels in 2006

01 December 2006: ESBA asks SMEs to take part in the Commission's new study on restricting the marketing and use of Dichloromethane.

Following a meeting with Mr. Philip Poels of Strippers Paint Removers, based in the UK, ESBA urges SMEs to respond to an online questionnaire about Dichloromethane (DCM or Methylene Chloride). DCM, a solvent widely used in many industries, has been the subject of debate between Member States for a number of years with differing views on health risks, performance and the need for risk management measures. In this context, the European Commission has appointed consultants to conduct a study, which seeks to gather the experiences of businesses who regularly use DCM, in order to allow the Commission to make a more informed judgement on potential legislation restricting its marketing and use. Mr Poels has advised ESBA that SMEs in the paint remover industry are threatened by the proposed legislation as, at present, all of the most efficient solvent based paint and graffiti removers - on which they rely - contain DCM. He considers that existing legislation controlling the use of DCM is sufficient. The consultation, which is aimed at producers and end-users, is available until the end of December here. CLOSED
