ESBA’s Annual Event and the celebration of the 10th Anniversary
took place in Brussels on 9-12 June. The very visible element of
the event was the ESBA’s Exhibition composed of 99 wooden
figures symbolising the 99.8% of EU businesses (which are SMEs)
gathered around one, much larger figure representing the remai-
ning 0.2% of businesses, which are big companies.
The project consisted also of a research conducted by ESBA to find
what the real constraints to business in Europe are. Posters, which
were displayed at the Exhibition, presented 11 real life cases studies
from across the EU describing red tape, its impact and possible solutions.
Given that 99.8% of EU businesses are SMEs, as visually demonstrated
by the Exhibition, it is essential that Policy Makers at all levels ’Think Small
First’ when legislating. Improving the regulatory environment for SMEs,
by cutting red tape in existing and future initiatives, will boost EU growth
and jobs.
